Fence staining and painting is not necessary but if you want to extend the life of your fence to it’s maximum you will want to stain and or paint. New wood fences are not cheap and staining might not be in the budget. That’s ok because you can normally wait 2-3 years and get the fence pressure washed and stain it
then and it will look about like it did the day you purchased it. You do have the option of purchasing your fence pre-stained and this is the best way to go if it fits within your budget. The wood is fully dipped in stain when pre-staining whereas staining after the installation is applied by spraying it on and not every surface will get protection. Spraying it on is not perfect like having it fully dipped but it does the job and it does it well if properly applied. There is a place for painting the surface of your fence and that has more to do with color than anything else. If you need or want your fence to be an exact color then paint is the option for you. Just know that at some point you or your fence repair company will be scraping off peeling paint and re-painting the fence. It’s the same with staining but there will be no peeling or scraping probably just pressure washing and re-staining every few years.
